Does the media’s coverage of criminal events contribute to the escalation of crime?

Can we understand the rise of events such as mass shootings in relation to the way the media reports them? When perpetrators seek notoriety for their crimes, how might the media ethically respond? How have standards changed in relation to the media’s reporting of criminal events?

Academic and author Glynn Greensmith, and journalist and author Bret Christian join retired Supreme Court judge and founder/editor of The Fremantle Shipping News, the Hon Michael Barker, to respond to these questions and discuss the media’s influence – both for better and worse – on local and global crime.
